Tyldesley Swimming Club were amongst 51 clubs competing in the 1998 City of Salford Spring Meet and did themselves proud as they took the trophy for 3rd position in the awards for the top visiting clubs and 4th overall.

Kate Ward and Khalid Jhugroo both finished in 1st position, Kate in the 14 year 100 m freestyle and Khalid in the 13 year 100 m breaststroke (NQT) whilst 15 year old Matthew Hampson secured his first NQT with a superb swim in the open age 400 m IM in which he finished 4th overall after slashing 2 seconds from his PB.

The 200 m events produced some exciting performances from Sarah Wood, Khalid Jhugroo and Kate Ward who finished in 2nd position after some close battles, Sarah in the IM, well under her previous best, and Khalid (PB) and Kate in the freestyle events.  Sarah and Kate also finished in 2nd position in the 100 m butterfly events in their respective age groups. 11 year old Samantha Thompson produced a superb swim in the 200 m freestyle reducing her PB time by 3 seconds to also finish 2nd.

3rd positions went to Khalid Jhugroo in the 100 m backstroke, 100 m butterfly and 200 m IM, all in PB times, Matthew Hampson in the 200 m freestyle (PB), Stuart Carlisle in the 14 year 100 m backstroke, Samantha Thompson in the 100 m butterfly and Sarah Wood in the 100 m breaststroke (PB).

Finishing in 4th place were: Samantha Thompson, 200 m IM; Stephanie Thompson, 100 m breaststroke (PB); Jessica Howarth, 100 m butterfly and Khalid Jhugroo, 100 m freestyle.

5th places went to: Michelle Greensmith, 11 year 200 m freestyle; Kelly Banner, 13 year 200 m IM; Samantha Thompson, 100 m freestyle (PB); Sarah Wood, 100 m backstroke (PB) and Kate Ward, 200 m IM. 

5th places in the open age events went to: Matthew Hampson, 200 m butterfly; Khalid Jhugroo, 1500 m freestyle and Kate Ward, 200 m freestyle with Kate also finishing in 6th position in the open age 50 m freestyle.

Stuart Carlisle set a new PB in the 200 m IM and was just edged out of the final, finishing as reserve in the 100 m freestyle (PB).  Maria Hampson finished in reserve position in the l2 year l00 m butterfly with Kelly Banner also as reserve in the 100 m backstroke. PB's were also set by: Andrew Hurst 1500 m freestyle, Mark Hurst and Maria Hampson for their efforts in their respective 400 m freestyle events and Stephanie Thompson in the 200 m breaststroke (PB).

James Gendall secured a final place after competing in the heat of the 100 m butterfly but had to withdraw from the final of this event.
